On Sept. 8, a contractor for Chelan County Public Works will begin installing stormwater drainage improvements on Arizona Boulevard in Malaga, where standing water has long been an issue for motorists and homeowners.
The work area at Riviera and Arizona boulevards will be closed to traffic during construction. Detours are available around the work zone via West Malaga Road and Sierra Boulevard. Construction is expected to last five weeks.
The project costs $223,000 overall and is being paid for by user fees to the county’s stormwater utility. Pipkin Construction of Cashmere is the county’s contractor.
Arizona and Riviera boulevards are part of the Three Lakes community in Malaga. Over the last several years, rain events have caused much standing water in the area; the stormwater system has failed in the area. Standing water causes a travel hazard and a nuisance to neighboring property owners.
This project will remove the existing stormwater system and replace it with new catch basins connected by pipes, improving roadside ditch conveyance. The contractor will also replace a 15-inch outfall pipe into Lake Cortez and install a quarry spall outlet pad to prevent scour and erosion. New driveway culverts will be installed at some properties.
